GLOBAL WARMING DENIERS.

To the Editor:
Letters contradicting the reality of global warming have appeared regularly over the past several weeks. They blame the media in general and Al Gore in particular, and claim that the scientists are simply wrong. Denial is a powerful force, but isn’t it time to face up? The science is now acknowledged as so strong as to be irrefutable. But so many of us prefer denial to reality, e.g. evolution, a battle long over and won by science.

Other delusions are stronger: e.g. that the U.S. is a democracy, whereas a military-industrial oligarchy with a democratic veneer is closer to the truth. 1000 military bases around the world—five in Iraq—demand that we maintain our imperial interests. Our future seems dedicated to fighting chimeras like Global Terror, which is scary, but not that big a deal—while real problems like health care, education, infrastructure and the environment go begging. 150 years of carboniferous capitalism have worked wonders, but at the price of polluting the atmosphere. And the jig is just about up. Big Industry’s sacrosanct ‘laws of economics’ are being trumped by the laws of physics and chemistry. Mother Nature is ticked, and she tolerates neither vacuums nor vacuous minds.Join the folks at Step It Up in Petaluma for Earth Day.
